This Guide Covers
- Core tools required for all KWIKtile installations
- Additional tools required for specific KWIKtile products
- Materials used across most installations
- Professional extras for advanced or large-format work
For surface preparation and substrate-specific requirements, refer to the
Core Tools Required for All KWIKtile Installations
These tools are required for nearly every tiling job, regardless of tile size or adhesive type
Mixing & Measuring
- Mixing bucket (clean, rigid)
- Drill with proper mixing paddle
- Clean water
- Measuring jug or container
Proper mechanical mixing is essential for consistency and performance. Hand mixing is not recommended.
Adhesive Application
- Appropriate notched trowel (see Notched Trowel & Coverage Guide)
- Steel float
- Adhesive scraper
- Margin trowel (useful for back-buttering and detail work)
Tile Placement & Alignment
- Rubber mallet
- Tile spacers
- Spirit level or straightedge
- Sponge and clean water bucket
- Cloths or rags
Cutting & Shaping
- Tile cutter
- Angle grinder with suitable blade (optional but useful)
- Tile nibblers (for small cuts and mosaics)
Priming & Slurry Application (where required)
- Block brush or long-bristle brush
Adhesive-Specific Tool Requirements
Some KWIKtile adhesives require additional or specialised tools due to tile size, setting time, or installation complexity.
Standard Ceramic & Porcelain Adhesives
KWIKtile 24, KWIKtile 18
No specialised tools beyond the core list are required. Helpful additions:
- Levelling clips for large porcelain tiles
- Chalk line for layout accuracy
Large-Format Adhesives
KWIKtile 12, KWIKtile XXL
No specialised tools beyond the core list are required. Helpful additions:
- Tile levelling clip system
- Suction cups for handling tiles
- Extended straightedge (1.5 to 2 metres)
- Margin trowel (useful for back-buttering and detail work)
- Laser level
- Vibration block or soft-faced hammer
For slabs and XXL tiles:
- Slab cutter or rail cutter
- Multi-suction lifting system
- Slab carrier frame
- Edge-support benches
Rapid-Set & Natural Stone Adhesives
KWIKtile 6 Grey, KWIKtile Super White 6
Rapid-set adhesives require efficient, organised installation. Additional considerations:
- All layout planned in advance
- Levelling system ready before mixing
- Back-buttering tools prepared
- Smaller working areas to avoid waste
Rapid-set products offer speed, but only when preparation is complete before mixing.
Mosaic Adhesives
KWIKtile Grey Mosaic Fix, White Mosaic Fix
Mosaic installations require finer control. Additional tools:
- Small notched trowel
- Mosaic nippers
- Laser line or straightedge for alignment
- Gentle rubber mallet
For wet areas:
- Waterproofing membrane (KWIKproof waterproofing kit or system)
- Reinforcing membrane for corners and joints
Materials Required for Tiling
Always Required
- Selected KWIKtile adhesive
- Kwikgrout
- Flexible movement-joint sealant (silicone or polyurethane)
Conditionally Required
- Kwikbond Additive, Required on dense, sealed, painted, or tiled substrates
- Waterproofing system (KWIKproof waterproofing kit or system) Required in showers, bathrooms, and other wet areas Includes liquid membrane and reinforcing membrane for joints and penetrations.
- Kwik-Key Primer (neat or diluted, depending on substrate)
- Kwik-Key Slurry Required on dense, sealed, painted, or tiled substrates
For the correct slurry mix and application method, refer to the article
Professional Extras (Optional but Recommended)
These tools are not mandatory but are strongly recommended for higher-quality results, especially on advanced installations.
- Laser level
- Long straightedges
- Tile levelling systems
- Suction lifting tools
- Slab vibration tools
- Extended measuring tools
- Layout and marking tools
Professional extras improve flatness, alignment, and finish quality, especially on large-format and rectified tiles.
Final Notes
- Always confirm substrate preparation before mixing adhesive
- Use the correct trowel size to achieve required coverage
- Plan layout and dry-lay where possible
- Keep tools clean during installation
- Refer to product datasheets for specific mix ratios and open times
